Consecutive serial numbers were not built in consecutive order
A serial table only works if serial numbers track production order. For several major makers they do not, and one specialist sets out exactly why for Walther PP and PPK pistols.
A real case
The explanation is that Walther "did not always produce a pistol for each consecutive serial number", and that "during the production process whole batches of pistols with consecutive serial numbers were set aside for future use — e.g. engravings or special contracts. Then the dates of production and proof firing can differ." A pistol whose number says pre-1940 can carry post-1940 proof marks, and both are correct.
What actually produces the discrepancy
Two further mechanisms compound it. Until the "P" and "K" suffixes were introduced, the PP and PPK were numbered in a joint range, so one sequence describes two models. And whole number blocks were reserved for single contracts — the RZM and the Munich police among them — which removes them from the ordinary sequence entirely.
The same structural problem appears elsewhere in different clothes: Marlin changed its dating system in 1973, so that a number is read by subtracting its first two digits from 100, while earlier arms used prefixes. One number can read as two plausible years across that boundary — the corpus has a Marlin owner landed on "either 1955 or 1978".
What to do about it
- Find out whether the maker changed dating systems, and when. A table that does not cover the change will give you a confident answer for the wrong era.
- Use a date-bearing component as a cross-check rather than a substitute: proof marks, barrel codes, patent dates.
- Where two eras are both plausible, the model and its features usually decide — a sight, a finish or a marking that only existed in one of them.
- Do not treat a serial as a production timestamp. It is a registration number, and registrations are not always issued in build order.

Other reasons two sources disagree
Every result names the chart it came from, the threshold it rests on, and — where the published table is documented as imprecise — says so on the result itself rather than returning a bare year.
